Service Desk Procedures & Guideline

4.1 Types of Reserves:

  • ELECTRONIC COURSE RESERVES: course-related articles and answer sheets that are available on-line, only to students taking the class. Materials are accessed through the Library website, (www.calstatela.edu/library); a password, available only from the course instructor, is required. Most inquiries on accessing electronic course reserve material should be referred to the Reserves Coordinator.
  • PHYSICAL COURSE RESERVES:
    • PERSONAL COPIES: Books belonging to Professors, available for short-term loans. 
    • REGULAR CIRCULATING BOOKS, CONVERTED TO SHORT-TERM LOAN AVAILABILITY, at an instructor’s request.
    • READY REFERENCE BOOKS, CONVERTED TO SHORT-TERM LOAN AVAILABILITY, at User Service’s request.
    • DVD’S, VIDEOS AND CD’S, are available in the cabinets at the Circulation Desk.

4.2 Loan Periods and Limits of Physical Reserves Items

LOAN PERIODS OF NON-ELECTRONIC RESERVES ITEMS: 1 HOUR, (Library Use Only); 2 HOUR, (Library Use Only); 24 HOUR; 48 HOUR and 7 DAY – depending on the instructor’s request.

CHECK OUT LIMITS:

  • Patrons are unable to check out more than _ out at one time.
  • The same course reserve item can be checked back out to a patron after a 20-minute wait period.
  • After _ period of time, a block is placed on ALMA. A University Hold is placed on a student's record after a _ period of time.

4.3 Checking Out Course Reserves Items

  1. USE CHECKOUT MODE; follow standard checkout procedures, see section 1.2.
  2. LOAN PERIODS WILL BE SET BY THE SYSTEM, according to the instructor’s request (see section 4.2, above). Write in the times due of 1 and 2 hour Loans; other short-term loans are stamped with the appropriately labeled stamper – then the time due is written in.
