How to set up a course reading list in Canvas.

Add items to your reading list

Now that you have created a reading list and added one or more sections, you are ready to begin adding resources to those sections.

Adding library resources

1. Click + Add. There are options for Search the library, Add from favorites, Upload files, Add using DOI or ISBN, Import references, or Manual entry.

 

 

2. Click Search the library.

  • The search defaults to Search Everything, but you can refine your search to Cal State LA Collections, Articles and more, EBSCO content, Course Reserves, Newspapers, or ALMA. You can further refine your search through Advanced Search.
  • To add a resource to your reading list…
    • Click the 6 dots on the left to drag it to the section you want it to appear in or
    • Click the + on the right, select a section, and click Add.

Adding non-library resources

1. Click + Add.

2. Click Upload files or Manual entry.

3. Complete the info:

  • Type
  • Title (for Manual entry)
    • Select the appropriate Copyright information descriptor.

4. Select Next.

  • Enter Item details (Creator, Source, Publisher, etc.) if you desire. Select Next.

5. Select what section you'd like to add this item to.

  • If you want to add a public note, a due date, or any other details you can add that now or edit the item later.

6. When finished adding the pertinent information, click Add.

7. A pop-up window will appear explaining that the library does not own this item. Select Suggest alternative resources and click Ok.

8. The item will now be listed, and you can click + Add to continue adding additional resources.

9. Don’t forget to publish your Reading List by clicking My list is ready at the top when you are finished adding your resources.
