Oct. 19, 2011 - Panel Discussion: Exploring the Themes of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Join us as faculty and community members explore the major themes of medical ethics, philosophical dilemmas, and race, class, and gender implications as they relate to the life and continued use of Henrietta Lacks’ cells in medical research. Guest speakers include:

Dr. Susan Saul, CSULA Department of Anthropology, discusses her past research and current insights working with “HeLa” cells, the immortal cells of Henrietta Lacks that continue to be used in medical and scientific research.

Students from the CSULA Honors College join with students at a science magnet high school to discuss the implications of Rebecca Skloot's book.

CSULA's Tony Cox, Associate Professor of Television Production & Broadcast Journalism, joins Jervey Tervalon, acclaimed Angeleno journalist & novelist, in conversation about issues of representation, authenticity, voice, cultural appropriation, and mainstream validation in literature and journalism. Can white writers ever truly tell the stories of people of color? Can men write women’s stories with authenticity? Can the rich give voice to the poor? Consider such questions and pose others of your own!
