Citation styles

For sociology projects and essays, you're typically expected to use one of two styles, ASA or APA. Check with your professor to learn which s/he wants used on a given assignment, then consult one of the following resources. 

ASA (American Sociological Association) style

  • The ASA Style Guide (7th edition, published in 2022) is available at the Reference Desk under this call number: HM569 .A54 2022.  This is the authoritative guide for ASA style. 
  • For a "cheat sheet" to ASA style, refer to the Library Quick Guide for ASA style, available in two formats, MS Word or PDF.

APA (American Psychological Association) style

  • The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition, published in 2020) is available at the Reference Desk under this call number: BF76.7 .P83 2020  This is the authoritative guide for APA style.  
  • For a "cheat sheet" to APA style, refer to the Library Quick Guide for APA style, available at the left in two formats, MS Word or PDF.
