Civilization, like intelligence, may serve well, serve adequately, or fail to serve its adaptive function. When civilization fails to serve, it must disintegrate unless it is acted upon by unifying internal or external forces.

Parable of the Sower, p. 101

Discussion questions

  • Though in deep crisis, the world of the future in Parable of the Sower does not seem to have resulted from an apocalyptic event: No war or single catastrophe appears to have led to the bleak human landscape. Is this realistic? Could it really happen?
  • Parable of the Sower features elements of human geography that seem to be perversions of the social good, including gated communities. What "good" ideas have actually increased social inequality?
  • What are the small ways that we see crisis and catastrophe around us in Los Angeles? What are the small things you think we can do to alleviate future suffering in this city?
