Peer-reviewed articles are vetted by experts in respective disciplinary fields and published in specialized academic journals.
Citing peer-reviewed articles in your papers and assignments demonstrates your engagement with and understanding of important research concepts and breakthroughs.
By citing peer-reviewed academic literature, you demonstrate your participation in the scholarly conversation about the topic.
Generally speaking, there are three types of peer-reviewed articles:
Empirical studies or original studies report on the results and application of an experiment, observation, or experience.
Review articles (sometimes called literature reviews) gather and survey (summarize) major theories, frameworks, and empirical studies that have had an impact on the disciplinary field.
Theoretical studies posit generalizable theories or frameworks on a subject or area of study, not its practical application.
