CalRecycle - Waste Characterization
CalRecycle conducts periodic waste characterization studies to better understand the types and amounts of materials disposed in and diverted from California's waste stream. Use the tool to view waste characterization estimates for a selected California jurisdiction(s) based upon statewide study data combined with local employment and population data. Residential data provides disposal stream data, while commercial sector data includes both disposal and diversion streams data.

Cal State LA - Zero Waste Program
Cal State LA's goal is to achieve 90% waste diversion by 2026 and move towards zero waste by 2036. These ambitious goals will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with waste sent to landfills, while further supporting the university's mission and commitment to sustainability.
L.A. City Sanitation
LA Sanitation (LASAN) is responsible for the collection and removal of all solid materials and waste in the City of Los Angeles. The City collects an average of 6,652 tons per day of refuse, recyclables, yard trimmings, horse manure and bulky items from more than 750,000 homes.

Plastic Waste in L.A. County
In August 2019, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted the OurCounty Sustainability Plan, a broad, regional strategy for transitioning the County to a more sustainable future. Action 107 of the Plan calls for the County, in cooperation with the City of Los Angeles, to phase out single-use plastics. In October 2019, the Board passed a motion directing the Los Angeles County Chief Sustainability Office to contract with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Luskin Center for Innovation to study the issues of plastic waste, processing, recyclability, and alternatives in the County, and to use the resulting study to inform the drafting of an ordinance addressing plastic waste.
